What Is the History of the Site?
The St. Augustine Fountain of Youth is said to be the oldest attraction in Florida. Dating back to the 1500s, this site is where it all began, 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock and 42 years before Jamestown! Before the arrival of the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513, the area that is now known as the Fountain of Youth was an early Native American settlement occupied by the Timucua tribe. In 1565, following Ponce de Leon’s arrival, Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded a European settlement at the site of the Timucua village of Seloy. The new settlement was named The City of St. Augustine, and it marks the original founding of the state of Florida.
