About the Park
While Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park only stretches about .8 acres, there’s a lot to explore in the area! This quiet park is a favorite spot among locals to get away from daily life and enjoy breathtaking views of the Amelia River. Now managed by Fort Clinch State Park, this historic landmark has been transformed into a stunning attraction that we know you’ll love. The park is situated in Old Town Fernandina, the last town established by the Spanish.
Fun Fact: Movie buffs will love seeing the “Pippi Longstocking” House on the border of the property, a historic home from the 1880s.
Discover a Rich History
The history of this park can be traced all the way back to 2,000 years ago when it was used as a Native American campsite. It’s also the site of the historic San Carlos Spanish fort from the 1800s. This area was the northernmost Spanish military base in Florida at the time. Today, you can walk the grounds and learn all about the history from educational historic markers.
Things to Do
There are so many ways to enjoy your time in this area. The park is situated within one of Amelia Island’s oldest towns that still holds a special charm today. Spend some time exploring the coastal village and admiring the architecture! If you’re looking for a chance to relax, we recommend packing a lunch and a blanket for a classic picnic by the river. Or, you can even come to watch the sunset like some locals often do. You may even get lucky and be accompanied by a musician serenading the sun over the horizon.
